Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People

Established in 2011, the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People was born out of the need to strengthen the rights and voice of older people globally. Today, GAROP is a network of over 330 members worldwide, united in our work to strengthen and promote the rights of older persons. GAROP is governed by a global Steering Group elected by our members and its work is supported by a Secretariat Coordinator.

WHO WE ARE

The mission of the Global Alliance is to support and enhance civil society’s engagement at national, regional and international levels on the need for a new international instrument on the rights of older persons

The Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People seeks a world in which older persons live free from discrimination and are able to fully enjoy their rights.

Our core values are partnership with, inclusion of, and the promotion of participation by older people in decisions that affect their lives. We respect the rights of all persons regardless of age, race, color, disability, gender, language, religion, sexual orientation, political views, national or social origin, class and birth or property status.

  • Intersessional Seminar on the Protection of the Family

    This one-day intersessional seminar is convened by the Human Rights Council, with the support of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The concept note for the seminar states that ‘the main objective and focus of the seminar is to examine the impact of the implementation by States on their obligations under relevant provisions of international law with regard to the protection of the family on the role of the family in supporting the protection and promotion of the human rights of older persons, and to discuss challenges and best practices in this regard. The seminar will have the participation of Member States and other relevant stakeholders, including National Human Rights Institutions, academic experts and civil society organizations.’

  • Side event – Violence against older persons: a violation of human rights

    The side event ‘Violence against older persons: a violation of human rights’ will take place during the Human Rights Council’s 38th session and will mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.  The event will explore the extent to which violence, abuse and neglect is covered by existing human rights mechanisms.  The event will focus on how different forms of violence, abuse and neglect have a direct impact on the denial of autonomy and a good standard of care, which link to the themes that will be discussed in the 9th session of the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing.

    The event will be held in Conference Room XXIII- Palais des Nations.
