Why do we need a convention for older people?

Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People

Established in 2011, the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People was born out of the need to strengthen the rights and voice of older people globally. Today, GAROP is a network of over 330 members worldwide, united in our work to strengthen and promote the rights of older persons. GAROP is governed by a global Steering Group elected by our members and its work is supported by a Secretariat Coordinator.

WHO WE ARE

The mission of the Global Alliance is to support and enhance civil society’s engagement at national, regional and international levels on the need for a new international instrument on the rights of older persons

The Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People seeks a world in which older persons live free from discrimination and are able to fully enjoy their rights.

Our core values are partnership with, inclusion of, and the promotion of participation by older people in decisions that affect their lives. We respect the rights of all persons regardless of age, race, color, disability, gender, language, religion, sexual orientation, political views, national or social origin, class and birth or property status.

    DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND THE CANCELLATION OF THE 11TH OEWG SESSION, THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED

    This workshop will be held on Sunday 5th April at the AARP offices (750 3rd Avenue, 31st floor) from 13:30-18:00. The workshop is targeted at NGOs and National Human Rights Institutions who are planning to attend the 11th OEWG session. There will be opportunities to network, updates about developments since the last session, and contributions from key UN stakeholders.

    This workshop will be held in English. Light refreshments will be served during the workshop.

    The 11th session of the UN Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWG) was due to take place in New York from 6th-9th April 2020.
