Why do we need a convention for older people?

Age discrimination and ageism are tolerated across the world, and older people experience discrimination and the violation of their rights at family, community and institutional levels.

Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People

Established in 2011, the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People was born out of the need to strengthen the rights and voice of older people globally. Today, GAROP is a network of over 380 members in around 80 countries worldwide, united in our work to strengthen and promote the rights of older persons. GAROP is governed by a global Steering Group elected by our members and its work is supported by a Secretariat Coordinator.

WHO WE ARE

The mission of the Global Alliance is to support and enhance civil society’s engagement at national, regional and international levels on the need for a new international instrument on the rights of older persons

The Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People seeks a world in which older persons live free from discrimination and are able to fully enjoy their rights.

Our core values are partnership with, inclusion of, and the promotion of participation by older people in decisions that affect their lives. We respect the rights of all persons regardless of age, race, color, disability, gender, language, religion, sexual orientation, political views, national or social origin, class and birth or property status.

  • Engaging Men to Ensure Implementation of Pro-Women Legislation
    15:30 -17:00
    2020.07.08

This webinar is organised by Shirakat-Partnership for Development as the Secretariat of MenEngage Alliance Pakistan and will take place on Wednesday 8th July at 3:30-4:00pm (Pakistan time). To register and obtain the link to join the webinar, please contact Bushra Aslam at bushra.shirakat@gmail.com.

The speakers will analyse successes and impediments in the implementation of pro-women laws and discuss how men can be engaged in the efforts to end gender-based violence. The discussion will be guided by following questions:

    1. Which laws, aimed at ending gender-based violence, have been amended or passed in your respective countries?
    2. How effective have these laws been in protecting women against gender-based violence and safeguarding women’s rights?  What role can men play in drafting such laws or advocating or lobbying for these to be passed?
    3. How can men be effectively engaged in drafting pro-women legislation?  Similarly, how can they be engaged in implementation, especially those working in implementing bodies?
    4. In what ways can men and boys be encouraged to support and promote the implementation of pro-women laws at the grassroots level?
    5. What are some un-conventional approaches to curbing GBV and ensuring effective implementation of women protection laws?
