Why do we need a convention for older people?

Age discrimination and ageism are tolerated across the world, and older people experience discrimination and the violation of their rights at family, community and institutional levels.

Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People

Established in 2011, the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People was born out of the need to strengthen the rights and voice of older people globally. Today, GAROP is a network of over 380 members in around 80 countries worldwide, united in our work to strengthen and promote the rights of older persons. GAROP is governed by a global Steering Group elected by our members and its work is supported by a Secretariat Coordinator.

WHO WE ARE

The mission of the Global Alliance is to support and enhance civil society’s engagement at national, regional and international levels on the need for a new international instrument on the rights of older persons

The Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People seeks a world in which older persons live free from discrimination and are able to fully enjoy their rights.

Our core values are partnership with, inclusion of, and the promotion of participation by older people in decisions that affect their lives. We respect the rights of all persons regardless of age, race, color, disability, gender, language, religion, sexual orientation, political views, national or social origin, class and birth or property status.

  • Shaping Europe’s Demographic Future: Pathways for societies to thrive in a world of rapid demographic change
    09:00 -18:00
    2021.12.01-2021.12.02

Many countries in Europe and Central Asia face rapid demographic change: people have fewer children and live longer, and many leave their countries to look for opportunities elsewhere. Societies are growing older and, in many cases, are getting smaller, especially in Eastern Europe where low fertility rates are compounded by high levels of outward migration.

The hybrid online/in-person Ministerial Conference on Demographic Resilience aims to contribute to strengthening the capacity of countries in Europe and Central Asia to respond to the profound demographic shifts the region is experiencing.

The conference, held on 1-2 December 2021 under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, will convene heads of state or government, ministers and other representatives of governments, civil society, the private sector, academia and the international community. It will kick off a Decade for Demographic Resilience that will mobilize political support for policy responses that are comprehensive, grounded in evidence, and based on human rights. And it will provide a platform for the exchange of experiences and sound policy advice, enabling countries to mitigate negative effects and fully harness the opportunities that come with demographic change.
