At a Press Conference at the end of her official country visit, the UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, Ms Claudia Mahler, shared her preliminary findings with the media. During the course of her visit, the Independent Expert met with many government and civil society representatives as well as other stakeholders such as regional and local authorities, the Deputy Ombudsman, service providers, academia and private sector. The Independent Expert also met with older people living in different settings as well as the personnel supporting them.

Emphasising the importance of a human rights based approach to enable, empower and value people to realize all their rights in dignity, the Independent Expert commended Finland for some of its efforts and also noted a number of ongoing challenges and areas where improvements could be made.

A comprehensive country visit report will be prepared and submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council in September 2022. Ms Mahler also congratulated Finland on being elected to the Human Rights Council for the period of 2022 to 2024.
